Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon
A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) consisting of a shield blazoned:  Barry nebuly counter nebuly of six Argent and Azure (Teal Blue) on a pallet Gules a propeller palewise of the first.  Attached below and to the sides of the shield a Silver scroll doubled and turned Teal Blue inscribed "OVER AND ABOVE" in Black letters.

Symbolism
Teal blue and white were the colors used for Aviation.  The propeller, an instrument of propulsion, symbolizes the Battalion's forward drive in its mission of support and reconnaissance.  The nebuly is used in heraldry to refer to the atmosphere and clouds and, therefore, alludes to the aerial aspects of the unit.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 1 July 1966.  It was rescinded on 23 December 1974.
